The Lion Logo: What “Pure Ceylon Tea” Means

A small lion on a tea pack carries a big promise. Here is what it stands for.

Look closely at many packs of Sri Lankan tea and you will see a small lion holding a sword — the Lion logo. It is one of the best-known symbols in the tea world.

A guarantee of origin

The Lion logo belongs to the Sri Lanka Tea Board. It may be used only on packs of 100% Ceylon tea that are packed in Sri Lanka and meet the Board’s quality standards. Tea blended with teas from other countries cannot carry it.

Why it matters

Tea from many countries is sold around the world, and blends can mix origins. The Lion logo lets shoppers see at a glance that what is inside is pure Ceylon tea, grown and packed on the island.

Pure Ceylon, from the Udarata

Our teas are pure Ceylon tea from the Kandyan hills. When you choose Ceylon tea, you support the growers, factories and families who have made the island’s tea famous for more than 150 years.
