In the Hantane hills just outside Kandy, an old tea factory has been turned into the Ceylon Tea Museum. It is one of the best places to understand how Ceylon tea is made — and how it all began.

What you will see

  • Historic machines for withering, rolling, drying and sorting tea
  • Displays about James Taylor and the early planters
  • The story of how tea shaped the hill country

Plan your visit

The museum is a short drive from Kandy town. Allow an hour or two, and check the opening hours before you go. Combine it with a walk in the Hantane hills or a visit to a working tea estate for a full day in tea country.

Afterwards, the best souvenir is a simple one: a fresh pack of Kandyan tea to brew at home.
